Rap star Eminem, who almost died from a methadone overdose last year, told reporters that he contacted rock legend Elton John for recovery support because of Elton’s past addiction experience and his understanding of the challenges and pressures of music stardom. Eminem says he is addicted to opiates and benzos. Elton responded and has been a peer support for Eminem for the past year and a half. See the story here.

What are your thougths on this?
I like the the fact that two high profile people are talking about recovery and supporting each other in recovery.
Methadone does have an overdose risk especially when combined with alcohol or benzos. So it is probably good for people hear about Eminem’s overdose…as long as they also understand that the overdose risk is low in a treatment context because you are taking the same dose every day and your body is used to that dose.
What are your thoughts?
I agree! I also like that these two are so opposite in many ways. which says to me it doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what your income level is, etc. etc. you need support and understanding from someone who’s been there and addiction crosses over all other “differences”. I LOVE music and have a lot of respect for both of their talent. The more people talking about it the better.
