I read Kristina Wandzilak’s book, “The Lost Years” last June, right after I discovered that my daughter was living in a ‘crack house’. I went to Kristina’s website, left a message, and she actually called me back. We were considering a formal intervention with my daughter at that time, and Kristina seemed interested in our story. She mentioned that a cable channel had bought her series and she was looking for families willing to be followed and filmed through the intervention process. I considered this option, since Hayley faithfully watched “Intervention” every week (ironic, I know). My therapist ultimately said that Hayley’s need for the spotlight, and filming our story, might not result in authentic recovery for Hayley – - – that she would be doing it for the attention and “glam” factor, not because she truly wanted to get clean/sober. I don’t know. Hayley didn’t seem to need an intervention – - – she knew she was an addict, and that what she was doing/where she was living, was completely unacceptable. And to give her an ultimatum to go to treatment, seemed like, once again, it would be “our” program for her, not her own.
It’s so hard to know what to do – and how to do it. I’m haunted, a bit, by the possibility that Hayley would have responded to an intervention that was filmed and shown on TV – - – but, decided not to pursue this option. Who knows what woulda/coulda worked?
Peggy,
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of the show when it comes out.
An intervention is of limited value without a realistic, effective treatment plan that is acceptable to the person seeking recovery. I think the drama is in the intervention (and the TV interest), but the post-intervention plan is also important. I’ll be watching for the quality of the post-intervention plan when I watch the show…hopefully they will include that information, but I suspect they will just say they are sending the person to an expensive residential treatment program.
Did Kristina give you any information about what the plan for your daughter would have been had she been on the show?
