Found this on stumbleupon. I’m glad to see this being addressed. I am a liver transplant patient (Oct. 26,2009) resulting from Hep. C. I know that the world is facing a huge problem and have been trying to decide how I can help people in my same situation. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful sister with my recovery as well as my husband. Some folks won’t be so. I really feel the need to help others. Any suggestions?
Hi Paula, Thanks for your comment. Would you be interested in writing a guest post about your experience with the liver transplant process, or if you prefer I could interview you for the site. I think a lot of people would like to hear about your experience. Tom
Great site. It as been refreshing to know I am not a complete rebel. I am the mother of an addict who is currently clean and on Sub to help curve her cravings, after a almost five year battle, I met an drug counselor who thought outside the box and told me it was so great I did not detach completely and suggested looking into Suboxone as a possible aid to her recovery. After several rehabs i am pleased to report she is almost six months clean. I was told it could buy her time to let enough settle in her brain to start grasping recovery. I have very strong feelings on slogan brainwashing and have seen many parents lose kids because of it. We are in a different time, and we can no longer just rely on 12 steps which were first introduced for a slower progressing disease, but carried over to many off shoots. Although I am for what ever is working for the addict. It was and is sad that my daughter cannot be considered clean by some of these groups. She does use a twelve step group as part of her recovery but it is also in group and one on one counseling. It saddens me and I often think they should include a AD group as i have seen the wait and see approach. Although i would not fault the parents for the loss of their child it seems that there should also be after care for parents and families should the bottom mean the worst. I am not in agreement with letters such as an Addicts plea which circle around like a biblical verse. Not for me, nor is hearing comments like keep coming back if you simply oppose such a view. It is demeaning and manipulative in my view, but for the most part any 12 step program someone is getting relief/help from thats fine, it just worries me deeply. I have felt somewhat alone in these views as the majority of voices are
repeated out dated slogans which can also do more harm than good. Thank you so much Tom. Mary
I’m so glad you are enjoying the site, Mary. Thanks for leaving all the interesting comments, and the nice compliments too.
Dear Tom,
Just discovered your website, excellent advice to parents, clients, etc.
As a CASAC and social worker myself with over 14 years experience working with substance abusers in NYC, I am always a bit leary of websites that claim to have “expert” advice.
I am curious about your consulting services and how you are fairing in that area?! Do you refer clients to specific programs?
Look forward to hearing from you,
J.Bos
