Katrina – It is clear from your comment that you are really upset about the situation with your son and his wife and baby. That is certainly understandable.

I would urge you to make sure that your pain, anger and frustration don’t prevent you from learning what you need to know about their situation. Acting from emotion, without understanding the facts, can really hurt your family.

The thing is, the doctor probably prescribed your son’s wife methadone because she was addicted to heroin or other pain killers like Oxycontin or morphine. Without methadone, she would have had to keep using heroin or pain killers, or gone through detox/withdrawal.

Both of those options would have put the baby at risk for miscarriage. Methadone treatment is used because it reduces the risk of miscarriage and other negative health outcomes for the mother and baby.

Methadone helped protect the baby, and may have saved the baby’s life.

Please consider reading this article about methadone for pregnant women.

If your son’s wife (and possibly your son) are addicted to heroin or other pain killers, you really should read all of the information here: methadone

It is possible that one or both of them need long term methadone treatment. And your negative feelings about methadone may prevent them from trying a treatment that could save their lives.

According to the US government experts at the CDC, methadone is the single most effective treatment for addiction to heroin or other pain killers.
