Vivitrol
Vivitrol is an extended release formulation of naltrexone. A single injection (into muscle) lasts one month. Monthly dosing has the potential to greatly improve treatment outcomes for people living with opiate addiction.
Naltrexone is not an opiate, but it has the ability to block the effects of opiates by physically occupying opiate receptor sites in the brain.
Other formulations of naltrexone are already used to treat addiction to heroin, OxyContin or other pain killers. Naltrexone is non-narcotic and non-addictive.
Vivitrol is currently under fast track consideration by the U.S. government for approval to treat opiate dependence.
